Joby Aviation expands defense and infrastructure footprint

Joby Aviation has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Resonant Sciences, a Dayton, Ohio-based defense technology company, for approximately $500 million. The acquisition aims to scale Joby’s defense business by integrating Resonant’s classified infrastructure, production operations, and radio frequency sensing capabilities with Joby’s autonomy technology stack.

Upon completion, Resonant Sciences will operate as Joby’s dedicated defense business unit. This structure allows Joby’s commercial aviation division to focus on the certification and manufacturing of its electric air taxi, while the defense unit focuses on dual-use turbine-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft.

In a separate strategic move, Joby Aviation has partnered with infrastructure firm Atoms to develop vertiport sites across the United States. The partnership will initially target Florida, New York, Texas, and California to support early operations under the White House-backed eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. Atoms will design these hubs to integrate electric aircraft, autonomous ground vehicles, and ridesharing services.
