Jocelyn Benson selects Winnie Brinks as running mate

Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson has selected Michigan State Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks as her running mate. Brinks, a West Michigan Democrat with extensive legislative experience, was chosen from a shortlist that included former Senate Minority Leader Jim Ananich and Senate Appropriations Chair Sarah Anthony.

Benson, the current Michigan Secretary of State, stated that Brinks will provide diverse perspectives and help ensure decisions center on the needs of citizens across the state. Brinks, who represents the Grand Rapids area, noted her intention to utilize her legislative depth to serve the people of Michigan.

Benson’s campaign has also faced scrutiny regarding her past association with the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). Benson previously served as a volunteer researcher and undercover investigator for the organization, and later served on its board starting in 2014. This comes amid federal legal proceedings involving the SPLC, where allegations have been made regarding the diversion of funds to extremist groups.
