Jochen Flasbarth to leave German Environment Ministry for climate foundation
Jochen Flasbarth, the State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, will resign his post to join the European Climate Foundation next year.
Environment Minister Carsten Schneider announced the departure in a letter to staff, describing Flasbarth as a veteran of German, European, and international environmental policy. Flasbarth previously served as President of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) and the German Environment Agency (UBA), and held the State Secretary position from 2013 to 2021.
Heike Henn, who currently leads the ministry’s International Climate Policy department, is expected to succeed him as early as November. The European Climate Foundation, headquartered in The Hague, is a major global funder for climate policy projects, reporting a budget of nearly 258 million euros in 2025.
