Jockey Rossa Ryan's 28‑day ban cut to 10 days after appeal
British jockey Rossa Ryan had his 28‑day suspension for “failing to take all reasonable and permissible measures” reduced to 10 days by a British Horseracing Authority disciplinary panel. The ban stemmed from an incident at Sandown where Ryan was judged to have eased off on Thunder Home, allowing the horse to finish a nose behind Zero Error.
The panel concluded that Thunder Home “could have won” rather than “would have won,” leading to the shorter sanction. The reduced suspension begins on 6 August, enabling Ryan to ride at York’s Ebor Festival and to contest the G1 Prix Morny at Deauville on 23 August. Rory Mac Neice, speaking for Ryan, said the panel “listened carefully” and that the distinction between “could” and “would” was pivotal.
The decision highlights the scrutiny jockeys face in the highly regulated sport of horse racing.
