Jocotenango Fair opens in Guatemala City

The traditional Feria de Jocotenango has opened in Guatemala City, running through August 16. Located at the Hipódromo del Norte in Zone 2, the event features over 200 food stalls and 87 attractions.

The fair honors the Virgen de la Asunción, the patron saint of the capital. Its origins trace back several centuries, with historical records documenting the festivities since 1620 and oral traditions suggesting a start as early as 1541 or 1550 in Santiago Jocotenango.

Following the Santa Marta earthquakes in 1773, which prompted the relocation of the capital, the celebration became a central fixture of the new city. Historically, the fair served as a significant social and economic hub, featuring livestock exhibitions, pottery, crafts, and horse racing. Today, it remains a major cultural event attracting visitors from across the country.
