Joe Lycett clarifies sexual orientation and identity
Comedian Joe Lycett has addressed public misconceptions regarding his sexual orientation, clarifying that he is not gay. Speaking on Fearne Cotton’s ‘Happy Place’ podcast, the 38-year-old explained that while he has been open about being bisexual for years, many people presumed he was homosexual due to his camp stage persona and use of innuendo.
Lycett noted that the confusion became particularly apparent following the birth of his son with his girlfriend in 2024. He stated that many people expressed surprise because of the assumption that he was gay. He further clarified his identity by noting that while he uses bisexual as shorthand, pansexual is a more accurate description, as he is not attracted to people solely based on their gender.
Lycett also reflected on the distinction between his stage persona and his private life, and mentioned experiencing biphobia from older generations of the gay community. He has chosen to keep his partner’s identity private to protect her professional life.
