Joe Morgan, former Boston Red Sox manager, dies at 95

Former Boston Red Sox manager and Hall of Famer Joe Morgan has died at the age of 95. The Red Sox organization confirmed that Morgan passed away on Saturday night, as reported by his daughter, Catherine.

A beloved figure in New England baseball, Morgan is best remembered for the ‘Morgan Magic’ era. After taking over as manager mid-season in 1988, he led the team to a remarkable surge, winning 19 of 20 games and securing an American League East division title. He led the club to a second division title in 1990.

Throughout his 18-year tenure with the organization as a player, scout, coach, and manager, Morgan helped develop several legendary players, including Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens, and Rich Gedman. Boggs praised Morgan’s baseball intelligence, noting that he often relied on ‘baseball hunches instead of statistics.’

Born in Walpole, Massachusetts, Morgan attended Boston College and played 88 Major League games as an infielder between 1959 and 1964. He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006. Red Sox principal owner John Henry stated that Morgan ‘holds a special place in Red Sox history.’
