Former FBI special agent Joe Navarro has identified malignant narcissism as a personality type that can cause more devastating interpersonal damage than psychopathy. While psychopaths, who comprise approximately 1 percent of the population, are characterized by a lack of conscience and a disregard for rules, Navarro suggests that the malignant narcissist inflicts profound harm within close personal relationships.

Malignant narcissism is described as an extreme form of narcissism that blends grandiosity and entitlement with antisocial tendencies, paranoia, and sadistic behavior. Navarro notes that these individuals tend to overvalue themselves while devaluing others, creating a discrepancy that leads to significant emotional and often financial trauma for victims. This pattern is frequently observed in men, with women often experiencing the resulting damage.
