Joe Rogan criticizes UFC win bonus pay structure
UFC commentator Joe Rogan has criticized the promotion’s compensation model, specifically targeting the practice of splitting fighter pay into a base amount and a conditional win bonus. During a podcast appearance with former bantamweight champion Aljamain Sterling, Rogan described the structure as the “most bullshit part of the UFC.”
He argued that the current system unfairly penalizes athletes for factors outside their control, such as poor judging, officiating errors, or unexpected injuries. Rogan contended that the win bonus fails to serve as a meaningful incentive at the elite level, stating, “There’s no one who’s fighting harder because you think you’re going to get a win bonus. You’re fighting as hard as you possibly can.”
Instead, Rogan advocated for a guaranteed purse model, suggesting that fighters should receive their full contracted amount regardless of the match outcome to protect their livelihoods from the “whims of people that sometimes get it wrong.”
