Joe Sakic to remain Colorado Avalanche general manager

Joe Sakic will remain the general manager of the Colorado Avalanche indefinitely, according to reports. The decision comes after the team had previously planned to search for a new GM following the departure of Chris MacFarland to the Nashville Predators.

Sakic, who already serves as the president of hockey operations, took over the GM role in June. He was the architect of the Avalanche's 2022 Stanley Cup championship and is the only person in NHL history to win a title as both a captain and a general manager for the same franchise.

Recent front-office activity under Sakic includes securing a $163.2 million, eight-year extension for defenseman Cale Makar and signing forward Jaden Schwartz to a three-year contract. The Avalanche are coming off a season where they won the Presidents’ Trophy but were eliminated in the Western Conference Final by the Vegas Golden Knights.
