Joe Swanberg’s new romantic comedy, “The Sun Never Sets,” explores the complexities of modern commitment and relationship dynamics. Set in Anchorage, Alaska, the film stars Dakota Fanning as Wendy and Jake Johnson as Jack, a single father who has been in a two-year relationship with Wendy.
To address Wendy’s desire for marriage and children—goals that conflict with Jack’s established life as a parent—Jack proposes a six-month break to allow Wendy to explore other options. This decision leads to a love triangle when Wendy reconnects with her former flame, Chuck, played by Cory Michael Smith, who proposes a life of marriage and many children.
The film was shot on location in Alaska, utilizing the scenic landscapes and the Chugach Mountains as a backdrop. Principal photography took place in May and June of 2025 under the working title “The Alaska Project.”
