Joel Campbell captains Inter San Carlos in Costa Rica top‑flight debut

Joel Campbell, the 34‑year‑old Costa Rican forward with a career spanning clubs such as Arsenal, Real Betis and León, signed for newly promoted Inter San Carlos ahead of the Apertura 2026 season. He made his debut in the club’s first Primera División match against Cartaginés at the José Rafael “Fello” Meza stadium.

Inter San Carlos coach Douglas Sequeira named Campbell the team captain and gave him the number 10 shirt, a role the player had never held at his former club Alajuelense. In that opening game the side recorded its first top‑flight goal – an own‑goal by goalkeeper Kevin Briceño after a Randy Vega cross – marking a historic moment for the newly promoted team.

Campbell joins Inter San Carlos with the aim of providing experience and leadership as the club seeks to establish itself in Costa Rica’s highest league.
