Joel Coen’s ‘Jack of Spades’ plot details and cast revealed

Details have emerged regarding Joel Coen’s upcoming gothic mystery, titled ‘Jack of Spades’. The film, which wrapped production in Glasgow around November 2025, is an adaptation of Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel, ‘The Alien: A Story of Middle Age’.

Patsy Ferran reportedly plays the lead role of Esther Mordaunt, a woman in her thirties. The plot is set in 1880s Scotland and follows a mysterious man, played by Josh O’Connor, who returns from the dead and becomes entangled in matters of inheritance and property. The cast also includes Frances McDormand, Damian Lewis, and Lesley Manville.

While earlier projections suggested a 2026 release, current indications point toward a 2027 distribution window. A first cut of the film reportedly ran approximately 150 minutes before a shorter version was screened for studios. The production features cinematography by Bruno Delbonnel and a score by Carter Burwell.
