Joel Santos assumes presidency of CUED to modernize electricity sector
Joel Santos, the Minister of Energy and Mines, has assumed the presidency of the Unified Council of Electricity Distribution Companies (CUED). His leadership aims to strengthen strategic management of the electrical sector, improve service quality, and accelerate the modernization of distribution networks.
Santos intends to foster better coordination between power generation, transmission, and distribution through common strategic planning. Key objectives include building more robust networks and improving customer service indicators for distributors such as Edenorte, Edesur, and Edeeste.
However, experts note that significant challenges remain. Addressing the electrical system requires political decisions, adequate resources, and deep management changes. Specific hurdles include reducing non-technical losses, such as electricity fraud and insufficient metering. While Edenorte and Edesur have made progress in meter installation, Edeeste continues to face difficulties in this area.
