Brazil: Lula meets Leonardo DiCaprio on climate and debates online betting ban
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and First Lady Janja hosted actor and activist Leonardo DiCaprio in Brasília to discuss environmental preservation, the Amazon, and indigenous rights. The meeting, which included representatives from the NGO Re:wild, focused on climate change, the role of women in protecting territories, and the potential of the bioeconomy to generate sustainable income without environmental destruction. During the visit, DiCaprio also met with indigenous leader Chief Raoni Metuktire.
Separately, the Brazilian government is addressing the social impact of online betting platforms. President Lula has characterized these platforms as a social evil that contributes to household debt, suffering, and health issues. With 70% of Brazilians supporting a ban, the government is considering a Provisional Measure to restrict or prohibit online betting to protect families.
