Johann Buttigieg faces calls to resign from Malta Planning Authority

Calls for the resignation or dismissal of Johann Buttigieg, Executive Chairman of Malta’s Planning Authority, have intensified following the publication of WhatsApp messages between him and developer Yorgen Fenech.

The messages, which resurfaced during Fenech’s trial, reportedly show Buttigieg colluding with Fenech regarding business deals and projects. Critics and several NGOs, including Ramblers’ Association and Moviment Graffitti, argue the chats demonstrate a conflict of interest and illegitimate influence. Some organizations have demanded that Buttigieg face criminal charges related to corruption.

Buttigieg previously held roles at the Malta Tourism Authority before being re-appointed to the Planning Authority by Prime Minister Robert Abela in January 2025. While the Nationalist Party and various civil society groups are demanding his removal, Prime Minister Abela has dismissed the calls, stating that the chats are not new information.
