Johann Lafer shares loss of taste and daily challenges while battling incurable lymph‑node cancer

Austrian‑German TV chef Johann Lafer, 68, disclosed that he is suffering from incurable lymph‑node cancer and has been undergoing chemotherapy since early 2024. In recent podcast interviews he described the most debilitating side effects, saying, “I have no taste and cannot eat and have open fingers,” noting how the loss of flavor and difficulty eating have made daily life “damned hard.”

Lafer said the emotional strain of missing family moments, such as his son’s birth, weighs heavily on him, but he remains determined to “live, work, love” and to continue creating culinary ideas. He hopes his openness about the disease may encourage others facing similar health battles.
