German Foreign Minister visits Tunisia and Algeria to boost cooperation
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul is conducting a diplomatic visit to Tunisia and Algeria to strengthen bilateral ties and address regional security. The visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and Tunisia.
In Tunisia, Wadephul met with President Kais Saïed and Foreign Minister Mohamed Nafti. Discussions focused on economic cooperation, particularly in energy, innovation, and professional training. Tunisia and Germany signed five agreements and projects valued at over 100 million euros, targeting sectors such as small and medium enterprises, digital transition, and water resources. Wadephul also addressed migration, emphasizing the need to tackle its root causes in the Sahel region to reduce irregular movement toward Europe.
In Algeria, Wadephul met with Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf and is scheduled to meet President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Germany views Algeria as a strategic partner for energy security and security policy, particularly regarding natural gas supplies and the future potential of green hydrogen. The discussions also covered regional stability in the Sahel and the Middle East.
