Johannes Golla requests transfer from MT Melsungen due to mental health
Johannes Golla, captain of the German national handball team, has publicly requested a transfer from MT Melsungen back to his former club, SG Flensburg-Handewitt, citing mental health concerns.
Golla, 28, joined Melsungen in the summer after an eight-year tenure with Flensburg. He stated on Instagram that the separation from his former community has left lasting marks and that his mental health is “seriously endangered,” noting that the situation has moved beyond mere homesickness.
Although Golla is under contract with MT Melsungen until 2031, both clubs are engaged in discussions regarding a potential solution. Melsungen's sporting director, Jesper Larsson, confirmed that the club is aware of the request and is exploring options, while Flensburg's sporting director, Ljubomir Vranjes, expressed full support for the player, describing him as a “legend” at the club.
During a recent match, Golla was reportedly booed by some fans in Melsungen. The player admitted that his decision to sign with Melsungen was premature due to changing family circumstances.
