Honor Colorado to skip 2027 internal elections, Cartes announces

Horacio Cartes, president of the Asociación Nacional Republicana (ANR), has announced that the Honor Colorado movement will not present any candidates in the 2027 internal party elections. This decision marks a significant shift in the Paraguayan political landscape, as it is the first time in two decades that the movement will not compete in these primaries.

Following this announcement, Minister of Housing Juan Carlos Baruja declared that he will not participate in any presidential formula for the 2028 elections, whether as president or vice-president. Baruja stated his decision was intended to avoid deepening internal divisions within the movement and confirmed his continued loyalty to Cartes and his commitment to his current government role.

The announcement has prompted calls for new political organizations. Raúl Latorre, President of the Chamber of Deputies, indicated that because electoral legislation requires Colorado sectors to organize through movements to compete, he intends to register a new movement to ensure participation. Meanwhile, Basilio Bachi Núñez, President of the National Congress, reaffirmed his support for Pedro Alliana's 2028 presidential candidacy despite the change in the movement's status.
