Johannesburg court hears Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala murder‑attempt trial

South Africa's High Court in Johannesburg examined the legality of police actions in the attempted‑murder case involving Vusumuzi “Cat” Matlala and alleged hitman Musa Kekana. The prosecution questioned why Captain Phimi Sekgobela did not obtain a search warrant before entering Kekana’s property, with the officer explaining he acted quickly to preserve evidence and lacked a name to attach to the warrant.

During the same proceedings, Kekana alleged police brutality, claiming he was assaulted and suffocated during his arrest. Sekgobela rejected the claim, saying Kekana cooperated and was attended to by an ambulance when he began coughing up blood. The trial also touches on earlier murders, including engineer Armand Swart, and alleged attempts on businessman Joe Sibanyoni and socialite Tebogo Thobejane.
