Johannesburg faces economic and infrastructure collapse
Johannesburg, the financial heart of South Africa and home to approximately 70% of the continent's major corporate headquarters, is facing a severe multi-dimensional crisis involving water shortages, massive debt, and collapsing public services.
Local businesses, such as Dickon Hall Foods, report significant operational disruptions due to the lack of water required for production and sanitation. The city's infrastructure is also deteriorating; waste collection is failing, and police and road maintenance vehicles have been grounded due to unpaid fuel costs. Furthermore, the national power utility Eskom has threatened to cut electricity supplies due to municipal debts that reached 3.8 billion rand by July.
Experts warn that the city's instability is exacerbated by political volatility, having seen 10 mayors in the last decade, and systemic corruption. Despite a doubling of the municipal budget over ten years, only 6% has been allocated to new infrastructure. Analysts suggest that an economic collapse in Johannesburg would have devastating consequences for the broader South African economy.
