Johannesburg residents protest persistent water shortages
Residents in several Johannesburg neighborhoods, including Brixton, Mayfair, Crosby, and Fordsburg, took to the streets on Saturday to protest ongoing water outages. Many community members reported going without tap water for up to a week, noting that even when supply is available, it is often throttled during the night.
Protesters expressed frustration over the lack of reliable service despite paying rates and taxes. Residents highlighted the impact on vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with medical conditions, and criticized the lack of communication from Johannesburg Water. While emergency water tankers are sometimes deployed, residents reported that they are rarely notified of their arrival.
The issues appear concentrated in areas supplied by the Commando system, which includes the Crosby, Brixton, and Hursthill reservoirs. Local advocates have described the instability in this system as a warning sign for the city’s broader water infrastructure. Meanwhile, Rand Water has warned of rising demand, and authorities have indicated they will target illegal water connections to manage the crisis.
