Johannesburg infrastructure damaged by illegal mining

Illegal mining operations are causing significant damage to the infrastructure of Johannesburg, South Africa’s economic hub. Underground blasting by irregular miners, known locally as ‘zama zamas’, has led to the collapse of roads, the formation of sinkholes, and cracks in buildings and factories.

These round-the-clock activities are undermining essential services, including transport, water pipes, and power networks. City Power has reported that underground excavations have compromised ground stability, putting substations, transformers, and transmission towers at risk.

Beyond physical damage, the mining activities have introduced increased crime to the region. Residents and officials report that the competition for minerals has led to armed shootouts and instability in areas such as Roodepoort and Denver.
