Johannesburg launches electric bus trial and transport plan for rugby match

The City of Johannesburg has launched an electric bus trial programme to modernize public transport and advance its green transport and climate action agenda. The 60-day trial, running through October 2026, will deploy electric buses on high-demand Metrobus and Rea Vaya corridors, including routes in Soweto, Sandton, the CBD, and Roodepoort.

The initiative aims to evaluate battery electric technology, intelligent transport systems, and operational efficiency under real-world conditions. Key metrics for the trial include energy consumption, battery maintenance, and passenger experience regarding noise reduction and emissions.

In conjunction with the trial, the city is preparing for the Springboks versus All Blacks rugby match at FNB Stadium on September 5, 2026. Mayor Dada Morero highlighted the Rea Vaya bus system as a quick and affordable transport option for fans, noting that account-based ticketing cards can be purchased for R30.00 at Rea Vaya stations to help reduce traffic congestion during the event.
