Hyron Andrews, Lions rugby player, dies in France

South African rugby player Hyron Andrews, a 31-year-old lock for the Johannesburg Lions, died in France on Friday, October 16, 2026, while the team was preparing for their Investec Champions Cup debut. Andrews was reportedly found unresponsive in a shower cubicle at the Atalante-Relais Thalasso hotel on Île de Ré. Emergency services responded to the scene, but he could not be resuscitated.

Authorities in La Rochelle have opened an investigation into the death. While the exact cause is pending an autopsy, initial hypotheses suggest the death may have been accidental, with some reports noting a suspected cardiac event. The player had reportedly shown no prior signs of health issues.

Despite the tragedy, the Lions proceeded with their scheduled Champions Cup match against La Rochelle on Saturday, October 17, as a tribute to their teammate. The match, held at Stade Marcel Deflandre, ended in a 31–14 victory for La Rochelle. Tributes included a guard of honour, moments of applause, and a heavy atmosphere of solidarity between the two clubs.
