Johannesburg mayoral race intensifies ahead of 2026 elections

Political contenders are positioning themselves for the upcoming November 2026 local government elections in Johannesburg. Mashaba indicated a willingness to form a coalition with any party that commits to fighting corruption, providing universal public services, and excluding undocumented foreign nationals from municipal services.

In a separate development, political analyst Prince Mashele has endorsed Helen Zille, the Democratic Alliance’s mayoral candidate, for the Johannesburg mayoralty. Mashele cited Zille’s extensive experience, including her previous roles as Cape Town mayor and Western Cape premier, as key factors for her candidacy. The race comes as Johannesburg faces significant challenges, including aging infrastructure, financial pressure, and unstable coalition politics. However, the endorsement faces opposition, with Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie ruling out any cooperation with the Democratic Alliance following the elections.
