Johannesburg municipal elections see Rise Mzansi challenge ANC
As municipal elections approach in South Africa, political competition is intensifying in Johannesburg. Rise Mzansi, a party founded in 2023, is positioning itself as a competent alternative to the African National Congress (ANC). Johannesburg mayoral candidate Lukhona Mnguni argued that long-term tenure in government has not guaranteed service delivery, citing issues like broken roads and inadequate lighting as evidence that voters should prioritize vision and competence over experience.
In response, ANC representative Jacob Mamabolo defended the party’s experience, warning that trivializing political knowledge should concern voters. The ANC has introduced a six-pillar manifesto aimed at self-correction within local government.
Other political discussions involve the Democratic Alliance (DA) and potential coalition dynamics. Some observers have expressed skepticism regarding the DA’s ability to avoid coalitions with the ANC, while others have noted the ANC’s proficiency in managing public narratives despite domestic challenges.
