John Bröcheler, celebrated Dutch operatic baritone, dies at 81

Dutch operatic baritone John Bröcheler has died at the age of 81. Born in Vaals on February 21, 1945, Bröcheler studied voice at the Conservatorium Maastricht and later in Paris under Pierre Bernac.

Bröcheler enjoyed a significant international career, performing at major venues including La Scala in Milan, the Wiener Staatsoper, and the Opéra de Paris. He was a frequent performer with the Dutch National Opera, where he sang more than twenty different roles, including Wotan in Wagner’s ‘Der Ring des Nibelungen’.

In the United States, he performed with the New York City Opera alongside Beverly Sills, the San Diego Opera, and the Los Angeles Opera. His repertoire included major roles such as Don Giovanni, Germont in ‘La traviata’, and Mandryka in ‘Arabella’.
