John Carey convicted in 1986 Claire Gravel murder case
After nearly 40 years, the murder of Claire Gravel, a 20-year-old Salem State College student, has been resolved with the conviction of John Carey. Claire disappeared on June 30, 1986, and her remains were later discovered strangled along Route 128 near Beverly, Massachusetts.
Investigators named John Carey as a suspect in 2022, leading to his eventual sentencing in April 2026. The case, which remained a mystery for decades, has been featured in an ABC '20/20' investigation titled 'The Salem Strangler.'
Following the conviction, Claire's five siblings and her 90-year-old father visited her grave, marking the first time the family has gathered there since the legal resolution of the case.
