John Carpenter confirms he still receives royalties from the Halloween franchise

Director John Carpenter said he continues to collect royalty checks each time a new Halloween film is released, thanks to contracts that pay him for the original characters and story he created with Debra Hill. He recalled that Universal Pictures proceeded with sequels and reboots despite his lack of involvement, noting, "I sit on the couch, and a check arrives in my hand."

Carpenter, 78, reflected on the 1978 horror classic’s lasting impact, its $70 million box‑office success, and his decision to step away from directing after years of work. He described the break as necessary for his well‑being, adding that he now focuses on music and other projects while still benefiting financially from the franchise’s ongoing releases.
