John Carpenter launches horror graphic novel “Cathedral” with accompanying metal album

Renowned horror filmmaker John Carpenter revealed that a vivid 2024 dream inspired a new graphic‑novel project titled “Cathedral”. The story, set in a disused church that leads to an underworld of demons and grotesque transformations, is being released as a comic rather than a traditional film. To complement the visual narrative, Carpenter partnered with Sacred Bones Records to produce a heavy‑metal soundtrack, each composition tied to specific chapters of the illustration. Carpenter explained to The Guardian that the dream was unusually cinematic and that working in comics and music lets him avoid the logistical pressures of large‑scale film production while preserving his creative independence.

The project reflects Carpenter’s broader shift away from conventional Hollywood studio filmmaking, citing long‑standing creative conflicts that took a personal toll.
