John Carpenter launches 'Cathedral' graphic novel and accompanying metal album

Legendary horror director John Carpenter has released his first original graphic novel, Cathedral, on August 4, 2026 through Storm King Comics. The story, inspired by a vivid dream about an abandoned Los Angeles cathedral and a hell‑bound elevator, follows three police officers who uncover a centuries‑old evil beneath the church.

The graphic novel is paired with a 14‑track synth‑metal album, also titled Cathedral, issued on August 7, 2026 by Sacred Bones Records. The album’s lead single, “Revenge,” is available for streaming. Carpenter co‑wrote the book with producer Sandy King and writer Sean Sobczak, and collaborated on the music with his son Cody Carpenter, godson Daniel Davies, and guitarist Daniel Davies. The project was promoted alongside upcoming appearances at Midsummer Scream in Long Beach, CA, and Fan Expo in Chicago, IL.

The release has been covered by multiple outlets worldwide, highlighting the unique combination of a horror graphic novel and a full‑length metal soundtrack, a first for the filmmaker.
