John Cena discusses WWE direction and his film career

John Cena has addressed recent criticisms regarding WWE’s creative direction for wrestler Gunther. During an appearance on Busted Open, Cena acknowledged fan sentiment that the company may be “wasting” the former World Heavyweight Champion.

Cena noted that while he cannot see the “view from the penthouse” or the internal planning meetings, he understands why fans feel this way following Gunther’s recent setbacks. He suggested the company might be intentionally cooling Gunther’s momentum or adjusting his television presence as part of a larger long-term strategy. Cena emphasized that his goal during their final match in December 2025 was to ensure Gunther appeared as strong as possible.

Separately, Cena reflected on his transition from professional wrestling to cinema. Speaking on the ‘3rd Hour of Today’, he admitted that he was once “run out of the movie business” during the early stages of his career because he lacked passion for film compared to the energy of the wrestling ring. He described early film sets as “super slow” and admitted he did not yet have the “wisdom for the process,” though he has since found success in major franchises.
