John Cena discusses WWE rebranding and the impact of wrestling personas

John Cena has discussed the evolution of professional wrestling, specifically regarding WWE’s transition to PG-rated programming and the personal impact of the industry on its performers.

Reflecting on the company’s rebranding, Cena noted that moving away from the TV-14 era in 2008 to a more family-friendly format helped expand WWE’s international reach and appeal to a broader audience. He observed that while the 1980s featured virtuous characters like Hulk Hogan and the Attitude Era focused on rebellious personas, the shift to PG required a long-term commitment to change public perception.

Cena also addressed how the demanding nature of the business affected legends like Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair. He suggested that the intense travel schedules and the pressure to maintain the illusion of real competition made it difficult for performers to separate their true identities from their on-screen characters. He noted that during the era of national expansion, wrestlers often spent more time as their intellectual property than as individuals.
