Saint John Chrysostom commemorated as a Doctor of the Church

The Church commemorates Saint John Chrysostom on September 13, honoring the 4th-century theologian and Patriarch of Constantinople. Born in Antioch, he earned the epithet ‘Chrysostom’ or ‘Golden-mouthed’ due to his extraordinary eloquence and mastery of rhetoric, having studied under the famous teacher Libanius.

Chrysostom is recognized as a Doctor of the Church and a pillar of both Eastern and Western Christian traditions. His ministry was defined by a commitment to social justice, as he frequently used his pulpit to denounce the corruption, luxury, and moral decadence of the imperial court and the wealthy. He advocated for the poor and sought to reform ecclesiastical practices to align with early Christian ideals.

His uncompromising stance against the powerful, including Empress Eudoxia, led to his deposition and multiple exiles. He eventually died in 407 during an arduous journey to an isolated location. His theological legacy and homilies remain central to Christian liturgy and spiritual reflection today.
