John Cleese reported to UK counter-radicalization program
Comedian and ‘Monty Python’ star John Cleese has been referred to Prevent, a British government counter-radicalization program, following complaints from Muslim activists regarding his online posts about Islam.
The referral, reported by the outlet 5Pillars, alleges that Cleese has engaged in a “sustained pattern” of comments that “demonizes, dehumanizes, and collectively attributes violence and criminality to Muslims and Islam.” The complaint cited several posts, including one describing Islam as “the religion of pedophiles” and another referring to a religious practice as a “barbaric custom.” Activists, including the group Deenified, argued that his rhetoric meets risk assessment indicators for anti-Muslim hate and could fuel communal tension.
Cleese, 86, has dismissed the controversy, characterizing the situation as “all good comedy material” for those with a sense of humor. He has defended his remarks as “Islamosceptic” rather than anti-Muslim hate, maintaining that religious beliefs, including Islam, should be subject to satire and criticism.
