John Coltrane centenary marked by global musical tributes

Various musical tributes are being organized to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of influential jazz saxophonist John Coltrane.

In Essen, Germany, the WDR Big Band, led by Bob Mintzer, will perform a special program titled ‘Coltrane 100’ at the Philharmonie Essen on September 26. The performance will feature saxophonist Chris Potter and aims to honor Coltrane’s legacy of musical exploration.

In other locations, commemorative events are taking place, including a performance at Cafe Oto titled ‘A Ritual for John Coltrane’. Led by Evan Parker, the improvisational tribute utilized soprano saxophone, percussion, and electronic elements to honor the spirit of the late musician. Additional events are expected to occur in Hamlet, North Carolina, later this month.
