John Coltrane centennial marked by rare recording release and global tributes

The world of jazz is celebrating the centennial of saxophonist John Coltrane, born September 23, 1926. Various international tributes are underway, including special programming on Brazil’s Rádio MEC and a week of film screenings, concerts, and lectures in Philadelphia, a city central to his musical development.

To mark the occasion, Impulse! Records has announced the release of ‘The Tiberi Tapes’ on November 6. This collection features over 26 hours of previously unreleased live recordings made by saxophonist Frank Tiberi between 1960 and 1964. Tiberi used a portable reel-to-reel recorder to capture Coltrane’s performances in clubs across New York and Philadelphia, seeking to document the improvisational freedom found in live settings that differed from his studio albums.

The release is a centerpiece of the ‘Coltrane 100’ global campaign. Musicians and scholars continue to highlight Coltrane’s profound influence on jazz, rock, and spiritual music, noting his technical innovations such as ‘sheets of sound’ and his mastery of modal jazz.
