John Coltrane centennial marked by global tributes and New York honors
The global music community is celebrating the centennial of jazz legend John Coltrane. In New York, the State Assembly and Senate unanimously passed a legislative resolution recognizing the saxophonist, composer, and bandleader as an artistic trailblazer. This resolution will be permanently archived at the John and Alice Coltrane Home in Dix Hills.
The ‘COLTRANE 100’ initiative, led by the Coltrane Estate, features a year-long series of global tributes, including concerts and archival discoveries. In Seattle, drummer Don Berman is set to perform ‘Ascension Northwest’ at the Chapel Performance Space, a composition written in the spirit of Coltrane’s 1966 work, ‘Ascension’.
Coltrane, who moved to New York in 1957, left a profound impact on various genres, including rock, hip-hop, and classical music, through his innovative exploration of blues, bebop, and avant-garde jazz.
