John Day River steelhead fishing to close September 1

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has announced the closure of steelhead fishing on the John Day River, effective September 1. The closure covers the mainline railroad bridge at the confluence with the Columbia River and all upstream sections, including the North and Middle Forks and their tributaries.

The decision was triggered by low wild steelhead counts. Approximately 15,000 wild steelhead passed Bonneville Dam between July 1 and August 23, falling short of the 20,000 minimum required to maintain the recreational fishery. Additionally, tagged adult returns suggest the smolt-to-adult ratio will fall below 1 percent.

The closure is expected to remain in place through at least December 31, 2026, with a possibility of extending into the following year.
