John Ellway wins Australian House of the Year at 2026 Houses Awards

The winners of the 2026 Houses Awards have been announced, with architect John Ellway receiving the top honors. His project, the Half Light House, was named Australian House of the Year and won the award for House Alteration and Addition Over 200 Square Metres.

Located in Brisbane, the project involved a renovation of a timber cottage that incorporated a transparent extension surrounding a new pool. The design focuses on creating distinct living zones while maintaining views between floors to provide a sense of both intimacy and expansiveness. The owners noted the design helps accommodate an expanding family while providing a sense of sanctuary.

Other notable winners include Billy Maynard Architects, who received the Emerging Architecture Practice award and won the Apartment or Unit category for a renovation in New South Wales. Jury chair Alexa Kempton noted that this year’s winning entries often emphasized longevity, adaptability, and the desire for homes to serve as places of respite from a hyperconnected world.
