John Giles named as running mate for Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs has selected former Mesa Mayor John Giles as her running mate for the state’s first-ever lieutenant governor election. The position was established following the voter approval of Proposition 131 in 2022, making the upcoming election the first time Arizonans will vote on a combined governor-lieutenant governor ticket.

Giles, a former Republican now registered as an independent, faces criticism from state Republicans. U.S. Representative Andy Biggs and Arizona GOP Chairman Sergio Arellano have challenged his bipartisan credentials, citing his past support for progressive policies in Mesa, such as nondiscrimination ordinances regarding gender identity and sexual orientation.

During a recent news conference, Giles addressed his stance on reproductive rights, stating he sees no conflict between being ‘pro-life’ and supporting a state constitutional amendment that allows pregnancy termination up to fetal viability. He noted that his vote on the matter accurately reflects his personal views.
