John Grisham warns of AI threats to the publishing industry

Author John Grisham has expressed concerns regarding the impact of artificial intelligence on the publishing industry. Speaking at the Edinburgh International Book Festival during a discussion with Ian Rankin, Grisham warned that AI may eventually reach a level where it can produce high-quality books similar to those written by professional authors.

Grisham highlighted the economic implications for publishers, noting that AI-generated content could be produced at a very low cost. He suggested a scenario where publishers might use AI to create books, attach a human name to them, and sell them to save on author royalties.

Additionally, the author noted a long-term decline in book consumption in the United States, stating that Americans and younger generations are reading fewer books each year. Despite these challenges, he observed that the publishing industry remains stable due to the profitability of e-books and the rapid growth of the audiobook segment.
