John Hoffman avoids felony charges after fireworks attack; shooter Vance Boelter sentenced to life

Hennepin County prosecutors announced that no felony charges will be filed against the suspect(s) who fired fireworks at Sen. John Hoffman’s home in Champlin, Minnesota, over the Fourth of July weekend. The office said there was insufficient evidence for a felony and will consider a gross‑misdemeanor charge.

The incident is linked to the 2024 attack on the Hoffman family by Vance Boelter, who also murdered Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband. Boelter was convicted on federal charges of politically motivated violence and received two consecutive life sentences plus 40 years. The case has drawn attention to extremist political rhetoric surrounding the shootings.
