John Hughes' Planned Breakfast Club Sequel Revealed by Anthony Michael Hall
Actor Anthony Michael Hall said that director John Hughes discussed a possible sequel to the 1985 film The Breakfast Club during a phone call in 1988. Hall recalled Hughes and John Candy calling him, noting that Hughes was “thinking about bringing back The Breakfast Club” with the original characters reuniting as adults in their thirties. Hall repeated the story on the Rich Eisen Show, adding that Hughes may have been “playing with” the idea but had not written a script.
Co‑star Molly Ringwald has also mentioned hearing about a script for a sequel, but she later expressed opposition to a remake, saying Hughes never wanted his classics remade and that the original film’s tone and casting would not reflect today’s diversity.
No concrete development of the sequel has been confirmed, and the discussion remains a retrospective recollection of Hughes' unrealized plans.
