John Jairo Méndez to lead Universidad del Tolima as rector

John Jairo Méndez Arteaga is set to assume the rectorate of the Universidad del Tolima for the 2026-2030 term. His appointment follows a university consultation in May where he received the highest number of votes among three candidates, leading to his official designation by the University Superior Council.

Méndez possesses nearly three decades of experience in scientific research, teaching, and academic management. A graduate in Biology and Chemistry from the Universidad del Tolima, he also holds a doctorate in Chemical Sciences from the University of Lleida in Spain. His career has focused heavily on applied chemistry for the agricultural sector, including soil diagnosis, pest control, and the development of bioproducts from waste materials.

Throughout his career, Méndez has participated in over 150 research projects. His previous administrative roles include serving as both Vice Rector of Research and Vice Rector of Academic and Teaching Affairs.
