John Kiriakou seeks US ambassadorship to Greece

Former CIA officer and whistleblower John Kiriakou has publicly expressed interest in serving as the next United States ambassador to Greece. In a video and posts on social media, Kiriakou appealed directly to President Donald Trump, positioning himself as a “dark horse candidate” who knows Athens well due to his previous counterterrorism work.

Kiriakou, who served with the CIA from 1990 to 2004, noted his Greek heritage and argued that Greece deserves an ambassador committed to transparency. He addressed reports characterizing his bid as “half-joking,” asserting that he is serious about the position. Kiriakou acknowledged that, due to his 2012 conviction for disclosing the identity of a covert officer, he would require a presidential pardon to hold the post.

The ambassadorship became vacant following the departure of Kimberly Guilfoyle. Currently, career diplomat Josh Huck is serving as chargé d’affaires ad interim at the US Embassy in Athens.
