John Lawless advises simple bedroom cooling tricks for heatwaves

Heatwaves are driving bedroom temperatures to uncomfortable levels, making it harder for many people to fall asleep. Experts recommend low‑cost methods such as placing a frozen water bottle or a thermos filled with cold water under the sheets before bedtime, which can lower the perceived temperature of the sleeping surface.

During the hottest part of the day, closing windows and blinds around 8 a.m.–9 a.m. helps keep hot outdoor air from entering, and opening them only after the outside temperature has dropped prevents a rapid rise in indoor heat. Fans are most effective when internal doors are opened and the units are positioned to draw cooler air into the room rather than simply recirculating warm air. Night‑time ventilation—creating a cross‑draft through the house—can also shave a few degrees off indoor temperatures.

A separate health warning notes that pigeons sometimes build nests inside air‑conditioning units. The nests can harbor bird mites (Ornithonyssus bursa), which may crawl into living spaces and cause itchy skin eruptions. Removing the nest and thoroughly cleaning the unit eliminates the infestation and the associated symptoms.
