John Lee orders investigation into Queen Mary Hospital elevator failures

Chief Executive John Lee has ordered a full investigation into elevator malfunctions at the new Queen Mary Hospital building, demanding a report within one month. The issue involves 24 out of 28 elevators failing to operate effectively since the building began phased activation last November.

Lee emphasized that the malfunctions must be corrected immediately to ensure essential medical services are not disrupted. He stated that the government will hold all responsible parties accountable, including contractors, subcontractors, engineers, professionals, and government personnel if any involvement is found.

The Development Bureau reported that the issues stem from improper installation craftsmanship involving dimensional deviations in the elevator shaft walls. Secretary for Development Ning Hon-ho noted that the situation is under control and expressed confidence that repairs will be completed within the fourth quarter. She added that the costs for these corrective measures will be borne by the responsible contractors and subcontractors to avoid using public funds.
